In this class, we will begin to explore the Chakra system. The literal translation of the Sanskrit word Chakra is “wheel” – there are seven energy/power centers (Chakras) that run along the spine, from the root to the crown of the head. The state of each Chakra reflects the health of that particular part of the body, as well as your psychological, emotional and spiritual well-being. When the Chakra energy is blocked or misdirected, emotional and physical illness can arise. This class will be a wonderful opportunity to harness the power that we have all been born to manage, freely and openly.

Be ready for an intense practice! We will be working with the first 4 Chakras, located at the root of the spine, the lower abdomen, the solar plexus and the heart. They are the most “physical” of the Chakra system, so plan on lots of standing and balancing poses, hip openers, core work, and backbends!

I DID IT!!! Over the course of this 40-day practice, I set an intention to re-read the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It has been quite a journey, and an education. I can only pray that I can continue to apply the foundation of the practice to every aspect of my life. Emphasizing, again, that this is a lifelong practice. We’re always learning and re-learning, always changing, always growing.

Thanks to Kristen Nunez for inspiring the 40-day challenge. Your commitment to your practice is an honor to witness.

I met a friend at the Calvert Wine and Arts Fair, held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Sunderland. The weather was fabulously and sunny (aside from the gusty winds), and the local vendors showed off their talents in woodworking, basket weaving, cooking, jewelry making and more.

What I truly love about this location is that there is a labyrinth at the top of the hill that you can walk through. As it is described, “You can walk a labyrinth alone while meditating on a single word, mantra or passage, while concentrating on a question that is troubling you, or simply just allowing your mind to focus on the movement of your body. You can walk a labyrinth with others and see an enactment of human life as others move closer and farther away during the journey, but eventually all arrive in the center. You can walk slowly or quickly. You can walk to honor an important event, such as a birth or a death. You can find in a labyrinth a place to put aside your troubles and anxieties, and find peace and relaxation.”

I set an intention, offered up a question, began walking and breathing. Twisting and turning, barefoot in the grass, sitting in the middle of the labyrinth opening myself up for answers.

One of the highlights of my teaching has always been the joy of bringing Yoga to a younger demographic. That’s why I absolutely love my classes at the College of Southern MD. The Spring semester is winding down, and my students’ final consists of creating their own 45-minute practice. We all get together on our last day of class and practice individually, as a group. I participate in this, too, getting on my own mat and practicing along side my students. It’s a true blessing to be with the same group, week after week, and be able to witness the progress in their practice.

Thanks to all my wonderful CSM students, past and present!

Ahhhhh…….Savasana……you know what I’m talking about…..that amazing pose at the end of a rigorous Yoga practice where you get to lay back and do nothing. Savasana is so necessary at the end of the practice because it gives you the opportunity to let the body and mind drink in all the wonderful benefits of all the poses you’ve just done. Savasana is known as Corpse Pose – it signifies the end, or the death, of your practice. But it can also be a place where you can “die” to the things in life that no longer serve you – old thoughts, old feelings, old habits.

Have you ever gotten on your mat and just rested in Savasana? Today I got on my mat and rested in Savasana for nearly 30 minutes. Relax – let the body sink down. Breathe – deeply for a few minutes, then softly. Relax – the jaw, shoulders, hips. Think – about as little as possible. Relax – let all worries, responsibilities and troubles go.

Relax.

A few days ago, I downloaded a Yoga video from an instructor whose style I am completely drawn to. Today I finally got on my mat, and moved through an amazing 90-minute “body prayer.” I reconnected to something in me, and in my practice, that I think might have been missing for a little while. I got back to a true feeling of interconnectedness between the body, mind, heart and spirit. I got back to the result of holding on to the past – it manifests itself physically. I got back to result of attachment to negativity – it manifests itself physically. I got back to how you start letting those things go: you get into your body, into a physically uncomfortable pose that shows where you hang onto to emotional baggage, and you stay there. You breathe in it, you resist the urge to get out of it. Because when your mind is telling you get out, your body can usually stay there. So you stay there. You send the breath to those tight areas, think about what you’re holding onto, and you stay there until you feel some surrender.

Physically challenging? Yes. Worth it? Without a doubt…

I’ve been writing about my 40-day practice for over a month now, and I like to remind myself, and everyone else who’s reading, that your practice reaches FAR beyond the mat. And your practice is going to be challenged, again and again and again.

One of the most challenging aspects can be practicing patience. Allowing someone else to speak their mind, while you’re chomping at the bit wanting to respond. Being patient and listening at times when you want nothing more than for someone else to hear YOU. This is all part of the journey.

This afternoon I took a walk through a beautiful park near my neighborhood. The trails lead you around the woods where you can watch wildlife, see fish swimming in the ponds, then walk on the beach at the Chesapeake Bay. I took advantage of the bay – sat down and watched the water, felt the sun setting behind me. Listening to my breath, opening my palms up to the sky, I took in all the outdoors had to offer.

If you are ever able to practice Yoga outside, or meditate by the water, I say GO FOR IT! It’s a beautiful experience.
